Compassionate mental health care for your child
Our Child Guidance Centre is an extension of our Pediatric Hospital devoted to address the needs of Mental Health of children.
We aim to help children and adolescents with difficulties in every aspect of their growing journey into adulthood – including developmental, behavioural and emotional problems.
We intend to provide a child-centered approach designing intervention based on the needs of each and every individual child keeping in mind their background support of primary caregiver (parents) & nature of community (school, neighborhood).
Beyond medical management, we strive to provide best possible facility for developmental guidance especially motor and sensory domains handled by trained professionals.
Belonging to evidence-based science, our multidisciplinary team comprises of – Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational therapist and Speech therapist.
Our team of dedicated professionals is here to support your child's growth and development.
Being the first contact for child & family, for referrals from other medical specialists and thereafter bridging with other medical / paramedical / allied professionals, burden of "preliminary assessment" falls on Psychiatrist.
Work spans from understanding the child in its entirety of family and community supports, recognising behavioural and emotional problems in the background of development (both physical & behavioural) to guiding caregivers through varied interventions including pharmacological and psychotherapy.
A Child's mental health can never be managed as a separate entity. Hence explains the need for range of psychotherapies encompassing family - for example: cognitive behavioral therapy for child, parent management training for caregivers, functional family therapy for entire family.
On the whole, Psychiatrist paves the way for addressing mental health of children and adolescents factoring in the role of other trained professionals to provide a holistic management.
Psychologist plays vital role in detailed evaluation of target problem through various standardized and validated tools. Work expands beyond assessment to individualized diagnostic intervention using strength based perspectives and practices.
The background principles for varied psychotherapies remain the same - Setting positive goals, developing personal strengths and identifying support needs.
Strategies to approach children span from addressing specific needs such as skills deficits, behavioral modification, improving communication to building social-emotional skills.
A concurrent Parental guidance / counselling must be initiated - to learn effective parenting skills, address any parenting stress, gain a better understanding of their child such as their behavioral problems or needs at every developmental stage - thereby providing comprehensive care for the child.
The occupational therapy intends to provide independence in all areas of life for a child. Therapy involves training designed for every stage and domain of a child's development. They are essentially play-based activities to build or reinforce skills in growing child.
Goals of occupational therapy broaden from strengthening motor skills (gross, fine & visual motor), enabling self-help/ self-care, refining self regulation, cognitive stimulation through play stepping up all the way to improve their abilities to perform everyday activities.
Speech therapy encompasses training in diverse conditions with communication difficulties - Developmental disorders (eg., Autism spectrum disorder), Neurological disorders, Articulation & Fluency difficulties (eg., Stuttering), Swallowing difficulties (as in Cerebral palsy) & Hearing impairment. Communication goes closely together with every other aspect (cognitive, socio-emotional & behavioural) of blooming child towards an eventual independent life
